Armide, the last opera by Jean-Baptiste Lully, libretto by Philippe Quinault, embodies the genre of tragédie en musique or tragédie lyrique: a style that was born as one of the many outcomes of the cultural project of the reign of Louis XIV, during the French Grand Siècle. The volume offers an analysis of the opera and of the reasons that justify its inclusion in the canon of European theatre, and also presents the most comprehensive reconstruction, as of today, of all the works of the musical theatre (and of other genres considered as relevant) that have been inspired by the story of Armide and Renauld.
